Outreach Activites 2008-2009 school year
Lamb Center, Fairfax — Lunches for the homeless during Lent
Free Clinic, Manassas — Blankets for children made by our students (see the Blanket Buddies Club web page for more details)
"Crusader Cupboard" SERVE, Manassas — One of St Andrew the Apostle School's continuing service projects is a monthly collection of food items for the Food Warehouse at SERVE (Serving Emergency Resource Through Volunteer Efforts), Inc., located in Manassas, VA. SERVE provides emergency food assistance to prevent hunger in the local community. Our school begins its fourth year of collecting items for SERVE.
Items requested include non-perishable canned, bottled and packaged foods, diapers and baby needs. On the first Wednesday of every month, starting in September and ending in May, school families and parishioners may drop off donations to the school office, where it will be bagged, picked up by a volunteer and taken to the Food Warehouse facility. Needy families come to the Food Warehouse to request necessary items to make meals. No one is ever turned away.
In the spring we request "heavy" items, such as canned and bottled food/drink items, as the Feinstein Foundation provides matching funds at $1.00 for every pound of food donated. Matching funds are used to purchase meat items to give to families. In the spring 2008 St. Andrew School proudly donated over 2,000 pounds of food over a 3 month period! What a great way to perform a Corporal Work of Mercy!
SERVE gives away an average of 700 meals each month at a cost of $1,200,000. There has been a 35% increase in need over the past six months.
Our Lady of the Blue Ridge — in May we donate food to help the kids get through the summer
Adopt-a-Family, St. Andrew's Parish — at Christmas time we adopt families from the parish to give them a nice Christmas
Pennies for Patients — Leukemia / Lymphoma
NCEA Child to Child Two — Our school/parish is participating in "Child to Child Two: A Catholic Campaign to Aid Education." It is patterned after the first "Child to Child" campaign, which responded to the needs of schools and parishes after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit in 2005. It is sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA).
We are asking for monetary donations to help the Catholic schools and parishes damaged by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Our goal is to collect at least $1 for every child in our school education program. We are very grateful for whatever you can donate. The monies collected will be sent to NCEA, a non-profit organization. The NCEA will distribute all donations to dioceses affected by the hurricanes, for use in helping schools and parishes re-establish their education programs. To learn more about the NCEA and the "Child to Child Two" campaign, visit www.ncea.org/Ike.
Three years ago, $1.2 million was collected from school children and youth in religious education programs to help schools and churches recover from the devastation of the 2005 hurricanes. The solidarity was remarkable.
Monetary donations will be accepted from now until (Friday, October 31st). Checks may be made out to: St. Andrew the Apostle School with "Child to Child Two" in the memo line. Please mail or drop them off at the school school office. One large check will then be sent on to NCEA. Contributions by individuals and groups qualify for tax deductions.
